Tomb Raider 2, Lara Croft and the Cradle of Life The release on August 22 2003 of Tomb Raider 2 triggered worldwide interest in Snowdonia and in particular Llyn Gwynant campsite, the location of a Chinese village in the film. Llyn Gwynant campsite is situated in the heart of some of the most dramatic scenery in the film. It is here that Lara is seen battling with her adversary Chen Lo, although identifying the landscape of Snowdonia may be a challenge in itself because the scenes have been transformed by computer-generated imaging. Llyn Gwynant was the main Welsh location, with other sequences filmed at Pen y Pass, Moel Siabod, near Capel Curig, the Alexandra Slate Quarry near Carmel and Ffynnon Llugwy. The production brought some surprise benefits to others in the area, including 30 members of the Chinese community in Caernarfon who were drafted in as extras and a local farmer who was asked to supply chickens, a gaggle of geese and a mule. Llyn Gwynant staff organised around-the-clock security for the filming, transport for the film staff, as well as specialist construction skills, for example building stone walls for the village set. Merlin This 1997 feature film, directed by Steve Barron was partly filmed at Llyn Gwynant. Indeed the mound behind our toilet block featured as the fabulous Camelot. Sam Neill plays Merlin as an accessible, flesh-and-blood fellow of real passion, powerless to undo the spell of a rival (Rutger Hauer) who has virtually imprisoned Merlin's great love, Nimue (Isabella Rossellini), but gifted enough to counter the treachery of Morgan Le Fey (Helena Bonham Carter) and the wicked Queen Mab (Miranda Richardson). The battle sequences and special effects are striking and original, and it is great fun to see such art-house movie actors as Richardson, Carter, Neill, etc., in fantasy entertainment the whole family can enjoy. Llyn Gwynant campsite staff were closely involved in security and construction
work. Check out our film photos
