Barns at Llyn Gwynant Campsite
Nantgwynant, North Wales

Facilities at the Llyn Gwynant barns

The Llyn Gwynant barns are available either for groups of campers, or for weekend (or midweek) events.

The barn complex consists of the three large rooms each adjacent to each other in an L-shaped layout. The Camping and Bunk barn are side by side with the large Function barn behind, a large room, 12 m by 12 m with a stage at one end (see photo opposite). Also included in the complex is a barn yard outside with portacabin toilet block and two private camping fields, Barn field and Cae hendre. See the site plan, barn floor plan, and Barn field photos.

Cooking facilities are in the kitchen area of the Camping barn, shown in two photos opposite. This kitchen at one end of the barn has 2 gas hobs, each with 4 burners, one electric oven, a large refrigerator/freezer, commercial dishwasher (which is for hire) and a microwave and toaster.

Woodburning fires provide heating and include a very large one in the Function barn, and another at the seating end of the Camping barn, see photos below. These may only be used with wood purchased from us, and must be used with care for fire safety.

Washing up is done at a large stainless steel sink with instant hot water. A commercial dishwasher is available for hire - this takes up to 45 minutes to heat up then completes each cycle in 3 minutes, using detergent provided. Please remember to bring your own cleaning products and drying up towels for hand washing up.

Sleeping platforms are provided in the tall Bunk barn adjacent to the Camping barn which can accommodate around 20 people sleeping, see photo opposite below. There are two levels with a space on each side of the steps, so 4 platforms in all. Please note that mattresses and bedding are not provided. Some larger camping groups use other areas of the barns for sleeping, including for example the stage, but this must be by arrangement. There are no mattresses or bedding provided.

Numbers of people accommodated in the barns include up to about 50 people in the Camping barn, with seating at tables in this room for up to about 25. The Function barn can accommmodate up to 300 people (this is the maximum fire regulations allow in the complex), and around 130 people at tables and chairs for a sit-down meal.

Furniture in the barns includes wooden tables and benches shown opposite. Furniture in the function barn includes two oak 8 foot tables, one shorter oak table that fits in the small reception room between bunk and function barn and four very heavy oak pews 8 foot 9 inches long, shown in photographs on our Equipment hire page In addition there is a small table with chairs suited to the use by the registrar.

A pubic payphone is provided in the Camping barn, see the photo on the Barn Groups page of the seating area of the Camping barn.

Electrical lighting and sockets are provided throughout the barns, with extra power facilities on the stage see below. Our provision of electricity is limited so additional electric heaters or catering equipment cannot be brought without prior approval.

The stage at one end of the Function barn is shown in a photographs above and below opposite. There are power sockets on the stage floor including a 30 amp power socket suited to sound systems. We offer a PA system for hire, and also professional stage lighting mounted on a triangle truss across the room, (for details please see our separate Sound and light information sheet.)

A well-tuned piano is provided on stage without charge, but by prior arrangement: this is an expensive instrument recently acquired and requires careful treatment.

Two woodburners heat the barns: a medium one in the camping barn and a larger one enclosed in a big stone fireplace in the function barn see photo on our Barns photo page.

Toilets are presently in a wooden well-made portacabin in the barn yard, with 1 ladies on one side and 2 gents and 2 urinals on the other. The toilets are porcelain and there are basins with running hot and cold water and electric lights. For very large groups additional portaloos can be hired and placed in the barn yard. The public campsite toilet block which has hot (and free) showers, is a few hundred yards away. The barns are presently being upgraded and eventually there will be internal showers and toilets in the barn complex, but this may not be until 2013 or 2014.

Parking is in the barn yard in front of the camping barn with room for about 30 vehicles around the barns. Overflow parking in wet weather is down the campsite driveway, (where there are laybys) or in the campsite car park at the bottom of Cae hendre, a very short walk from the barns.

Motorhomes or large campervans must be sited in the hard standing near Cae hendre (go down the Campsite drive and turn left at the rates sign). This is only a short walk from the gate at the bottom of Cae hendre. Large events may use parking in barn field but only by prior arrangement and in good weather.

Camping is in the fields outside the yard: Barn field and Cae hendre are not visible from the campsite, although they are very close. Hiring the barn complex for an event includes the private use of these fields for tent camping or small campervans, with parking in barn field allowed by arrangement if the ground is sufficiently dry. Both fields have beautiful views over the lake and are very close to the barns.
